Chapter 7: A juicing machine

Behind a pair of black, metal gates, tall concrete walls and pistola-armed guards lies the headquarters of Sucocitrico Cutrale, the largest citrus company in a country that has become the world’s giant. Cutrale, which provides one in four glasses of orange juice to a thirsty world, has at least 10 million trees planted in the red-clay soil of Sao Paulo state, Brazil’s major citrus growing region.
