Chapter 11: Lost groves, then lost boom

Citrus and real estate, two industries that have left indelible marks on Florida, share the boom-and-bust cycle. Straddling both, Tony Nicholson rode the boom and is now reaping the bust. He was one of a handful of subdivision builders who made a habit of buying vast tracts of Florida’s citrus groves, tearing down the old trees, and putting up new homes for the throngs either moving to the Sunshine State or investing in its red-hot real estate sector.
