Strength in unity

Florida’s citrus growers hate meetings. Sure, they love to get together — the insular group that they are — over lunch and swap lies about who can get 850 boxes of Valencias out of an acre when a stellar crop is 425. But the zoning board, the city council, the county commission, regional water-supply districts — anyone they view as impeding their growth — is off limits. Enter the four main growers groups. The three men and one woman who head those organizations get the task of going to local meetings — and to Tallahassee, and to Washington, D.C. — lobbying for growers with as little as 100 acres to as many as 100,000.
